Drop-Side Cribs Linked to Serious Injuries

Stork Craft Manufacturing Recall Just the Latest in a String of Such Actions

The nationwide recall of about 2.1 million drop-side cribs from Stork Craft Manufacturing in November June 2009 once again turned a spotlight on the issue of how dangerous, and in some cases deadly, the common pieces of household furniture can be. Suffocation, broken and bruised limbs, and accidental falls are among the injuries most commonly associated with broken or defective cribs.

Other Crib Recalls

Recalls of children’s cribs are common, with several such actions being ordered each year. The reasons for the recalls vary, but in most cases, a defect in the furniture poses an unreasonably high risk of injury or death to children. Some of the most recent crib recalls are summarized below.

  • In June 2008, about 1,200 Stanley cribs were recalled due to there being too much space between the crib mattress and the sides of the crib, which posed a risk of children getting stuck in the opening. Read more about the recall.
  • In June 2008, Bassettbaby cribs were recalled over concerns about the side spindles on the cribs being too far apart, which could allow infants to become trapped. Click here for more details on the recall.
  • About 24,000 Munire Furniture cribs were recalled in February 2008 due to faulty support springs, which posed a risk of children falling. Learn more about the recall.
  • About 1 million Simplicity cribs were recalled in September 2007 amid concerns about the drop-side railings on the cribs trapping or suffocating infants. At least two deaths were linked to the defective Simplicity cribs. Read more about the Simplicity Crib recall.

Common Crib Injuries

Children may be injured by defective cribs in many ways. Hands, feet, arms and legs can become trapped in side slats or spindles of the crib that are too far apart or easily broken. If a slat is cracked or broken, cuts, scrapes and other injuries are likely to occur.

The most common crib injuries include:

  • Suffocation
  • Broken bones
  • Bruises to arms, legs and other body parts
  • Cuts and abrasions
