Millions of Drop-Side Cribs Recalled After Infant Deaths, Injuries

More than 2.1 million drop-side cribs made by Stork Craft Manufacturing have been recalled after more than 100 reports of children being killed or injured when they became trapped in gaps in the sides of the infant beds. The action was the largest crib recall in U.S. history.

The recalled cribs were sold throughout the United States and Canada beginning in 1993 in major retailers such as Kmart, Sears, and Wal-Mart as well as online through Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, and Target.com.

Infant Deaths, Injuries Reported

Children who got their head, neck, arms, legs, and other body parts trapped in openings in the drop-side cribs have been suffocated and suffered broken bones, bruises, and other injuries. The following reports of injuries and deaths have been associated with defective Stork Craft Manufacturing drop-side cribs:

  • 110 incidents of drop-side detachment (67 incidents in the United States and 43 in Canada)
  • 15 entrapments (12 in the U.S. and three in Canada)
  • 4 of the entrapments resulted in suffocation, including a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y., a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La., a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va., and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y.
  • 20 falls from cribs (12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada), causing injuries ranging from concussion to bumps and bruises.

Dangerous Cribs Pose Risks of Death, Injury

The recall includes about 147,000 Stork Craft cribs carrying the Fisher-Price logo, along with 1.2 million beds sold in the U.S. and another 968,000 distributed in Canada. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging parents, grandparents, daycare operators, and other caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled drop-side cribs until a repair kit can be installed to make the cribs safer.
